Registry settings for configuring USB driver stack behavior

The registry entries described in this topic are found under this key:

In the vvvvpppprrrrr key,

  • vvvv is a 4-digit hexadecimal number that identifies the vendor
  • pppp is a 4-digit hexadecimal number that identifies the product
  • rrrr is a 4-digit hexadecimal number that contains the revision number of the device.

The vendor ID, product ID, and revision number values are obtained from the USB device descriptor. The following table describes the possible registry entries for the vvvvpppprrrrr key. The USB driver stack considers these entries as read-only values.

Registry entryDescriptionPossible values

osvc

REG_BINARY

Supported on Windows XP and later versions.

Indicates whether the operating system queried the device for Microsoft-Defined USB Descriptors. If the previously-attempted OS descriptor query was successful, the value contains the vendor code from the OS string descriptor.

  • 0x0000: The device did not provide a valid response to the Microsoft OS string descriptor request.

  • 0x01xx: The device provided a valid response to the Microsoft OS string descriptor request, where xx is the bVendorCode contained in the response.

IgnoreHWSerNum

REG_BINARY

Supported on Windows Vista and later versions.

Indicates whether the USB driver stack must ignore the serial number of the device.

  • 0x00: The setting is disabled.

  • 0x01: Forces the USB driver stack to ignore the serial number of the device. Therefore, the device instance is tied to the port to which the device is attached.

ResetOnResume

REG_BINARY

Supported on Windows Vista and later versions.

Indicates whether the USB driver stack must reset the device when the port resumes from a sleep cycle.

  • 0x0000: The setting is disabled.

  • 0x0001: Forces the USB driver stack to reset a device on port resume.

What do the four LED’s on the top right of the keyboard indicate?

Caps Lock, Num Lock, Scroll Lock and Fn. When the Fn light is illuminated it means that the keyboard is in the secondary (“embedded”) layer and each key will produce secondary key actions legended in blue.

My pivot tether, can I get a replacement?

Yes, replacement Pivot Tethers can be purchased from the Kinesis Store.

Can I change the hotkeys or create custom layouts on my Freestyle keyboard?

No. The Freestyle keyboard is not programmable. If you are looking for a programmable split keyboard, checkout the new Freestyle Pro.

Will the Freestyle2 PC work on my Mac?

The hot-keys on the left side of the Freestyle will only work with the specific operating system it was designed for. If you connect a PC Freestyle2 to a Mac the hot-keys will not work, however as a work-around you can swap Ctrl with Command in the operating system which will allow the hot-keys to work:

Go to System Preferences/Keyboard/modifier keys (make sure the selected device is for the Freestyle keyboard (KB800PB)). Swap Ctrl with Command. Now the hot-keys will work as intended. This will also make the individual Ctrl keys behave as Command keys, which makes more sense on a Mac.

Do I need to install any software or drivers?

No. The Freestyle keyboard is recognized by the operating system as a standard USB device and thus loads the default keyboard driver on the operating system. The Freestyle2 keyboard is plug & play.

Can I plug the Freestyle2 for Mac into the USB port of the Freestyle2 keypad?

Drivers Actions Usb Devices

No, and neither can you do the reverse. Both the FS2 keyboard for Mac and the FS2 keypad have USB ports and you cannot plug a hub into a hub unless the latter has an external power supply.

If your Freestyle2 is not working review the Troubleshooting Tips at rights. If you still need help, use the link at the bottom of the page to submit a Trouble Ticket.

The Freestyle PC keyboard has an embedded numeric 10-key on the right side of the keyboard. When the keypad key is on, as well as Num Lock, the keys on the right side will produce numbers. Simply press and release the “Fn” key (bottom left of the keyboard) to toggle on and off.

If your keyboard has a single dead key, it may be worth removing the keycap and spraying canned air to make sure there isn’t any dirt or debris causing the key to fail. A trick to remove the keycap is to use two paper clips- bend them in the shape of a hook or “J” and pull the keycap straight up) and spray canned air inside the key switch to remove any dirt/debris. If there appears to be any sticky residues on the keycap or on the key switch, try to clean the area as best as you can (usually a damp paper towel is good enough).

If the key still does not work, please submit a Trouble Ticket.

If your keyboard has multiple dead keys, likely there is a short in the keyboard and requires a repair. Please submit a Trouble Ticket.

Check keyboard connections. Make sure the keyboard is connected directly to a USB port on the computer. For testing purposes, do not use a USB hub, docking station or KVM switch. Connect direct. Reboot computer. Press the Fn key and see if the LED light turns on or not. If the light turns on, it indicates power is received. If the LED is not turning on, that indicates a physical problem with the keyboard.

You can also try connecting the keyboard to a different computer (preferably a different brand and/or model) and see if you can reproduce the problems or not.

Left palm support does not fully engage into the slots of the keyboard

We discovered this problem in early September 2020. The issue is that the left bottom case got modified without our knowledge preventing the full length of the palm rest tabs from fitting into the slots in the bottom of the keyboard case. The bottom case is being restored to the original design for future productions.

Actions

The solution is to shorten the (3) tabs on the left palm support. In late October 2020 we plan on receiving a batch with shorter tabs on the left palm support. If you do not want to wait that long we have (2) other options:

1) Send out a replacement left palm support that has been trimmed at Kinesis.
2) Trimming the tabs yourself, by removing approximately 1/8 inch from the end of each of the three flat tabs (just be careful not to cut yourself). If the result is not satisfactory you can request the new “molded shorter” version when they arrive.

Device

The Freestyle2 is backed by a two year limited warranty
