      • For all the functionality of the peripheral devices, a driver must be installed for each peripheral device on the host system.

To obtain the simplest possible configuration of the drivers inside a USB system, the different peripheral devices are divided into device classes HUB (networks), audio (speaker, microphone), printer, communication (modem ), high capacity memory (HDD) and user interface device (keyboard, mouse, joystick). The drivers required for these classes are already contained in the vendor list of all popular operating systems such as Windows or Linux. When the peripheral device is connected to the USB, the connected peripheral device is detected by the host system by means of a hardware identification transmitted by the peripheral device and then determines the class of device that the device device transmits by means of a descriptor and that the peripheral device uses to notify its attributes to the host system. From the determined device class, the operating system loads the corresponding driver, which is then entered into the registry and can be associated with this entry when the peripheral device is subsequently reconnected. .

For peripheral devices that do not belong to any defined device class, the driver must be loaded from the diskette or installation CD. For this purpose, the driver is loaded on the host system during a separate installation process using an installation CD or an installation diskette provided by the device manufacturer. In general, this requires entering user data that is time consuming and requires a user to have a thorough knowledge of the peripheral devices and the host system. In particular, in mobile variable environments, for example cybercafés, a corresponding new installation by means of a diskette or a CD is necessary. To this must be added the problem that for such systems accessible to the public the installation of software by a user is not allowed.

The object of the invention is therefore to propose a solution that allows a simple and flexible commissioning of peripheral devices with USB connection on any host system.

The goal is achieved by the fact that the driver is stored in the peripheral device with USB connection, an automatic installation of the driver on the host system being performed during a commissioning of the peripheral device on the host system. In addition, the object is achieved by a method of commissioning the USB-connected peripheral apparatus in which the peripheral apparatus outputs a descriptor of a class of apparatus defining a large-capacity memory and wherein the host system integrates the peripheral device as a reader to access the system, automatically installs into a memory associated with the host system the driver stored in the peripheral device and between the driver in the registry file of the host system.

According to the invention, there is thus a peripheral device for performing a simple and very flexible commissioning of the peripheral device without having specific knowledge of the system. Due to the fact that the peripheral device, whose device class is not known to the operating system, pretends to be a device associated with the class of high-capacity memory device, it is possible to at any time, integrate the peripheral device into the host device's device driver because the driver is known to the operating system of the host system so that user access is not required to install the necessary driver the operation of the peripheral device.

This is particularly advantageous in that the manufacturer does not need to provide a floppy disk or driver installation CD. In this way, in terms of hardware, it saves on manufacturing costs that are generated by the development of floppy disks or CDs, storage and packaging.

Advantageously, once the driver is installed, the peripheral device is disconnected from the USB so that the peripheral device is even deleted from the device manager. When a new connection is made to the USB, and due to the fact that an entry in the registry was made after the installation, the operating system is able to associate the correct driver to the peripheral device so that the driver is loaded and the application can be started on the peripheral device.

Other advantageous conformations and improvements of the invention are presented in the following claims.

The invention is explained in detail in the following with reference to the figures shown in the drawings in which: FIG. 1 represents a peripheral device of the invention connected to a host system and FIG. 2 is a flowchart of an implementation. service of the peripheral device of invention on the host system.

FIG. 1 shows a host system 1 to which a peripheral device 3 is connected via a USB interface 2. The peripheral device 3 comprises a memory in which identification data such as a hardware identification or a class of data are stored. associated device, an initialization program with driver files, and an installation tool for installing the driver on the host system. The peripheral device is then designed such that it is detected by the host system 1 when connected to the USB interface 2 and transmits its device class to the host system 1 by means of a descriptor. If no standard device class in memory in an operating system of the host system 1 can be associated with the peripheral device 3, the peripheral device 3 automatically starts the initialization program, the driver files being copied to a hard disk, not shown here, of the host system. A register is adapted by the operating system of the host system 1 and the driver is integrated by the own mechanisms of the operating system.

Figure 2 shows the progress of a commissioning of the peripheral device 3 of the invention on the host system 1 and the installation process related to this commissioning. In a first step 1, a user has connected the peripheral device 3, for example a smart card, to his host system 1. The smart card then transmits its hardware identification and a large capacity memory descriptor to indicate to the system host 1 the device class associated with it. If the operating system of the host system can associate in step 2 the smart card with a device class that is known to it, then it automatically integrates the smart card as a new reader in step 3 by example in a device manager and an explorer of the host system 1 because a specific driver of this class of devices is known to the operating system. The driver required for the operation of the smart card and the initialization program for performing the installation of the driver on the host system 1 are stored in the memory 4 of the smart card. The automatic installation of the driver is performed in step 4, the driver being stored on the hard disk of the host system 1. The driver entered the register of the host system 1 in the next step 5. In step 6, the integrated smart card as a high capacity memory is automatically disconnected from the USB. The operating system then removes the smart card from the device manager. In step 7, the smart card is again connected to the USB, the operating system then associates the correct driver to the smart card whose device class is unknown, then to step 8 charge the corresponding driver so that a target application can be performed via the smart card.

The peripheral device of the invention makes it possible to perform a very flexible and very simple commissioning of a peripheral device on any computer system without the user making specific or general data entries which can only be performed if the user There is special knowledge of the computer system or peripheral device, particularly when using publicly available computer systems in which software is not allowed.
